France is now a flawed democracy

In a previous post, we asked whether France did turn porcine in the context of a grim fiscal outlook:

The results of the democracy index of The Economist are very interesting after the biggest election year in History. According to The Economist, France is now a flawed democracy. Clearly, France is in a political deadlock and the quality of institutions is deteriorating. The democracy index and plenty of interactive visualization are available here:

“France was downgraded from a full democracy to a flawed one. This mostly reflects a deterioration in its confidence-in-government score after president Emmanuel Macron’s snap election in June failed to secure a legislative majority for any single party or bloc. (Four different prime ministers during the course of the year did little to instil confidence either.)”

France do not perform very well in the Functioning of the government, Political Participation, and the Political Culture:

The world situation is not very good either:

“The global average dropped to a new record low of 5.17, down from a high of 5.55 in 2015. Just 6.6% of the world’s population now lives in a full democracy, down from 12.5% ten years ago. And a large share of the world’s population—currently two in five people—lives under authoritarian rule.”
